Due to the Coronavirus MOTs have been extended by 6 months if it was due between 30 March and 31 July 2020. However, your MOT will not be extended if it was due from 1 August 2020 – you need to get an MOT as normal. To see full details about this please visit

New Car?

If your car is new, you’ll need to take it for an MOT test when it is three years old. You can find the date that your car was registered in your vehicle registration document (V5).

Car older than 3 years?

If your car is over 3 years old, you can take it for its MOT test up to a month before it’s  MOT expiry date.

Forgotten your MOT expiry date?

If you can’t remember the date of your car’s MOT test due date, or maybe have lost your MOT certificate, you can check online.

MOT Expired?

If your MOT certificate has expired, the only time that you can drive your car is to and from the MOT test centre.

 Failed your MOT?

If your car fails the MOT but your original MOT has not expired, you can drive your car until it does expire. If the original MOT has expired, you can only drive your car to and from the MOT test centre.

Is my car insured?

If your car is more than three years old and doesn’t have an MOT, it is likely your car insurance will be invalid.
